As the warmer months finally arrive, the excitement grows for fishing along the Maumee River, boating in Lake Erie, exploring lush forests, and enjoying wildlife in parks. We look forward to outings with our families and making memories to last a lifetime. One thing that ties these joys together is a clean and healthy river, but our local streams require our care. Rivers and streams need your support and luckily, there are people and organizations that can help here in Toledo. Please support PCS as we work to protect those rivers. Your monetary donation goes straight into programs like river cleanups and public education services that directly influence the health of your local rivers and streams. April is often known for its rain, spring like weather, and Earth Day. While we cannot promise the rain or weather, we can get excited about our Earth. And at PCS, we are excited about Earth's fresh water. Over three-fourths of our Earth is covered in water but less than three percent is fresh water, and most of that is frozen. Of that usable fresh water, seventy-five percent is within the Great Lakes. The little bit of fresh, usable water on this planet is worth protecting. The Maumee River is the largest of any of the rivers flowing into the Great Lakes and deserves to be cared for to sustain our drinking water, our commerce, our recreation, and our abundant wildlife. This is our main message as we celebrate Earth Day. We encourage you to find more ways to reduce our impact, conserve resources, appreciate nature, and celebrate your Earth! On April 12, many volunteers will be in your local neighborhoods marking drains with the message: “Drains are for Rain, Flows to Waterways” as part of Global Youth Service Day.  The youth volunteers are taking time to remind everyone (and learn) that rain and surface water flowing into storm drains is not filtered before it reaches the nearest streams. They are also asking people to not pollute and mistakenly dump things like trash, car oil, paint, and pet waste down these drains. While they are out in the community, give them a shout and tell them you appreciate their work. If your group would like to participate in Storm Drain Marking on a different date throughout the spring and summer, just let us know!
